Day 7- Zurich, Switzerland

Day 7- June 29th

Today was a travel day. We left Lauterbrunnen and the area known as the Berner Oberland and headed for Luzern and Zurich. Our original plan was to take the train to Zurich and stop in Luzern to site see, but there was a festival going on in Luzern and we couldn’t find anywhere to store our bags, so we headed to Zurich to check into the hotel instead. After checking into the hotel, we headed for some exploring in downtown Zurich. Zurich and the greater Zurich area are home to 1.3 million people, so it was a rather large city. We took the Rick Steve’s short walking tour to get a quick overview of the city.

Zurich, Switzerland

Along the way, we’ve seen several places where you can play life-sized chess, however, Zurich was the only place we’ve seen someone actually playing so we had to take a picture.

The clock face of Zurich’s St. Peter’s Church, this is one of the largest clock faces in Europe at 28 feet in diameter.

While we were in Zurich, the city was putting on a watch party for the championship game of Euro 2008. The city streets were crowded with people heading to the watch party and food and beer vendors selling food. This was another cultural experience I’m not quite sure how to explain. All of these people were coming to the city to watch a game their teams weren’t even playing in (the game was Germany versus Spain), yet it was a big deal for the people of Zurich. Here are a few pictures from the event.

They had 3 screens like this one set up for people to watch the game. This screen was in the lake.

This was the entrance to the watch party event

These giant figures were set up inside the Zurich train station

All of these pictures are awesome, thanks for sharing. If your trip is 1/2 as much fun as it looks and sounds you guys must be having the time of your lives.

As a side note, thought Tim would be interested to know that Chris Duncan is batting .400 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI since Tim left the country. Coincidence?!?!?
